“I got my start training a little more unconventionally than most, I was 26 and 350 lbs before I started taking my health seriously. CrossFit for me has meant a transformation that I didn’t think was possible. I started CrossFit in Brunswick, Ga. I completed my first WOD in a 10×20 storage unit in the 95+ degree South Georgia heat. The WOD was 3 rounds for time: farmers carry, overhead lunge, KB swing and a 200m run. I felt absolutely miserable after it was over but knew something was different about this way of training. My trainer was the high school quarterback of my graduating class and had always been in shape. He was very encouraging and I told him what my goals were, mainly to lose weight and be healthy. He put me on a paleo/primal diet and a schedule of working out 5 days a week and the weight starting falling off.
After losing 60 pounds in the first 2 months I was hooked. After 9 weeks of CrossFit and diet I could; do a kipping pullup, had increased my deadlift from 415 to 450, and I was signed up for my first 5k run. Fast forward to today and I have lost 115 lbs and can do 35+ pullups unbroken, have over a 500# deadlift and have run several long distance races (and running is my nemesis). Without hard work and CrossFit this wouldn’t have been possible.”

“In high school, I was extremely active and basketball consumed my life. I had accepted before graduation that it was time to move on, and after conveniently stumbling across the CrossFit Games on TV, I began to look for CrossFit gyms in Statesboro, where I would be attending college at Georgia Southern University to get my Bachelors in Management. This led to me to CrossFit Boro and I was set on becoming a member. The more I researched CrossFit the more I fell in love with it, and when I arrived in Statesboro, I wasted no time scheduling a No Sweat Intro and getting into the next On-Ramp.
Since then, CrossFit has opened up countless doors for me and introduced me to some of the greatest people I have ever known. I have never been happier with the state of my fitness, and the knowledge I have gained since joining CrossFit about the countless movements and best ways to exercise efficiency have transferred in my day to day activities. CrossFit made me faster, better, and stronger not only mentally and physically, but also inside and outside of the gym. I got my CF-L1 and began my position as a concierge. Shortly after I got my nutrition certification, and I am still finding countless ways to better myself with the support of an amazing community.
CrossFit has made my life exponentially better, and I could not imagine my life without it. I will always owe CrossFit and CrossFit Boro for molding me into the person I am today and for bringing me the people who I adore”

“I have been an athlete my whole life. I grew up playing every sport possible before settling on softball, basketball, and tennis. After high school though, I was no longer playing sports competitively, so I had to find some way to stay active. While at UGA, that meant going to Ramsey and having the regular gym experience. However, when I came back to Statesboro for graduate school in May 2012, I found CrossFit Boro. I still remember the very first workout I did: 3 rounds of 3 minutes to run 400m and an AMRAP of push presses. Even though I was so sore that I could barely move the next day, I immediately knew CrossFit Boro was for me because I liked not only the competitive atmosphere, but also the group setting where everyone cheered each other on.
A year after joining CrossFit Boro I decided I wanted to become a trainer, so in June 2013 I went and got my Level 1 Certification. In August 2013, I began my internship at CrossFit Boro, and became an official CrossFit Boro trainer in February 2014. Even today, I am still seeing gains in my strength and overall fitness with a highlight being finally achieving a muscle up after 3 months of hard work and practice. I still enjoy the competitive and family atmosphere that CrossFit Boro offers. It has been especially unique for me because it has allowed me to work out with my mom and youngest brother.”

“In 2012, under doctor’s orders to stop running, due to plantars fasciitis, I started looking for a different style workout. After reading a newspaper article about the newly opened CrossFit Boro, I talked my daughter, Kacie, into giving it a try with me. We are both still here, along with my youngest son, and now I join her as a trainer. Being one of the older members, I appreciate that CrossFit can be scaled to my abilities, yet I still get an excellent workout, conditioning, and performance results. With two children so dedicated to CrossFit and the desire to live a healthy lifestyle, I decided that I wanted to assist with the CrossFit Kids program and hopefully impact them in such a way as to also want to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. While my main training focus is kids, I love popping into regular classes and interacting with all members of the CrossFit Boro family. While it can initially seem intimidating, I’m proof that CrossFit is for any age and fitness level so come check us out. I look forward to meeting you and assisting you in any way possible as you start your CrossFit journey into what I know will be a new, exciting, constantly changing, and challenging workout experience.”

“I’ve played sports my whole life. Although softball/baseball was my family sport, soccer is the sport that provided me with the most opportunities. I played during undergrad , then began coaching high school, club, and university levels while I worked on my masters. I picked my boots back up and played club soccer in England while I worked on my PhD. I heard about CrossFit while living abroad as a number of my college players went to CrossFit following their collegiate soccer careers. When I moved back to the states, I was looking for something to help me drop my PhD weight (it is a real thing). I began running marathons and participated in bootcamp classes. I was looking for a little more of a challenge and found a local CrossFit box.
CrossFit changed my life! Over the last three years, I have transformed holistically. Not only have I gotten fitter, but my drive has developed even more. Through CrossFit, I have learned lessons that extend far beyond my workouts and into my personal and professional life. Following my trainers recommendations, being active in the box, and leaning on my community to help to become a better person has allowed me to continue to succeed in a number of areas.
Consequently, I want everyone to try CrossFit. I know it isn’t for everyone, but I think a large number of people can benefit from CrossFit when they allow themselves to listen to others, help others, and work with others, all while striving to reach their own goals.
Heck, how often do you get to sweat with teenagers, professionals (EMTs, fire fighters, military workers, professors, nurses, business owners, etc…), college students, and other people from your local community while you all push through a workout, challenge yourself, and succeed day after day?”

“I have been involved in athletics from a very early age and am a former Army Ranger. I swam competitively in college, was an avid hiker, studied martial arts, and have even trained in MMA. I love being active and exercise has always helped me focus mentally. As I aged, I lifted weights some, tried spin classes, ran, etc. I didn’t watch what I ate and wasn’t really consistent with working out. I believed that (given the season of my life) working out hard and being competitive was over. Soon, I found myself in the ER with chest pain. This was a wakeup call. After extensive testing, it was determined to be due to anxiety, although my cholesterol was high and I was 30 lbs overweight. The doctor wanted to put me on prescription medicines. I asked for the opportunity to lose some weight and exercise more. I decided to try CrossFit. I thought it was more of a “younger person thing”, but needed to make change. I joined Crossfit Boro two years ago and love it. I take no medicine (my cholesterol is great), and (at the age of 49) I have only 11% body fat. I love the community, the support, the competitiveness, and the fun we have in each class. I eat well and push myself every day. I want to be a healthy role model for my children. Mentally and physically, I am in better shape than any other time in my life. No matter what your goal is, it is possible. You are not alone. We are here to teach, encourage, support, and motivate. As a trainer, this is what I hope you feel when I coach.”

“I started CrossFit over five years ago at the age of 63. Prior to starting I had just had my annual physical. I weighed 208 pounds, took blood pressure medicine, took cholesterol and triglyceride medicine and was warned that my blood sugar was rising and would soon need medicine to control it since diabetes is familial.
Although I did play basketball twice a week, working at Georgia Southern meant a largely sedentary life. My son was a member of a CrossFit in Atlanta and told me how varied CrossFit was and how all the movements could be scaled. I joined CrossFit Boro in August of 2013. I attended three days a week. At the same time I started watching my diet. I cut out bread, pasta and soft drinks. I ate more meat, salads, vegetables and snacked on almonds.
At CrossFit I could barely do the movements even scaled. It was difficult to run 400 meters without stopping. Although frustrated with my abilities, I also knew that if I didn’t do something that I was in a long slow decline and did not want an existence where I couldn’t play with my grandchildren or travel and do what I wanted.
After a year of CrossFit, my annual physical revealed my weight to be 180 (it is currently 168), I no longer needed blood pressure medicine or cholesterol medication. My A1 blood sugar was perfect. All my other blood tests were normal. I was stronger, faster, and better.
Even more importantly, I found a community I respected. We cheered each other on and supported each other. The coaches taught me to move safely. When I left CrossFit Boro each time, I always felt a sense of accomplishment. The work was challenging and I learned to push myself and focus on learning.
Two years ago I earned my coaching certificate and I also earned a CrossFit Kids certificate. As a teacher educator, working with different populations allowed me to combine my education background and CrossFit background.
CrossFit Boro owner, Ryan Brack, Head Coach Alex Trahan and I talked about expanding our program to reach a special group that might want to change the direction of their lives. Workouts will be scaled individually for participants and will focus on purposeful movements for an hour each session. We wanted to be the place where members could make a difference in their lives.
As the oldest member of CrossFit Boro, I have felt especially motivated to serve this new population.“

“For the vast majority of my life, my physical fitness training came through the art of dance. Since the age of three, I trained in many different styles of dance and continue to teach dance to young people in my spare time. CrossFit was something that I never saw myself participating in, much less enjoying. However, in the fall of 2015, I was looking for something to keep my young sons active and came across the CrossFit kids program at CrossFit Boro. My husband and I enrolled them in the program and he soon followed suit into the On Ramp. Two months later, on an absolute whim, I signed up for a personal training On Ramp with the intent of doing CrossFit for six months just to prove to myself that I could. I simply did not envision that I would fall in love with the sport and make it a part of my daily routine.
Now, as the CrossFit Boro Performance Coach, I have the unique opportunity to combine my love of CrossFit with my training as a psychologist. With my professional training and my specific expertise in behavior intervention, I can help you to reach your health and fitness goals through individualized goal setting, plan development, and accountability. Whether you want to lose weight or tackle a specific CrossFit skill like pull-ups, I can help you realize your potential.”

“I played sport after sport after sport in my early teens. Volleyball season went into soccer season. Soccer season went into track season. Track season went into softball season. And the cycle continued until the fall (pun intended) of 2007 when I tore the ACL in my right knee playing in a Varsity soccer game. I experienced a wide array of emotions in the eleven months that it took for my knee to recover from surgery. Anger, regret, frustration, boredom. But ultimately, I came to know peace and accept the setback. I returned the next soccer season more determined than ever. That is, until I tore the ACL and meniscus in my left knee only a couple of months into the season. In that moment, I cried more from knowing my high school athletic career was over than from the physical pain that ensued. I had ACL reconstruction surgery and went through physical therapy just as I had done before. Only this time, there was no peace. I could not settle with knowing that the competitive nature of sports and the compassion of a team would no longer be familiar to me. Sports had been my life. They had been my outlets. And then, so suddenly, they could do nothing for me.
Eventually, I forgot what it felt like to be part of something bigger than myself. I forgot what it was like to work my butt off in order to reach a goal, whether figuratively or literally. The forgetfulness helped me to cope. I went on this way through my first year of college at LSU, and then (thank God), I stumbled upon CrossFit while living in Baton Rouge. Little did I know when joining a local affiliate that my life would be forever altered. First, the sense of comradeship and the inextricable drive that comes with physical (and consequently, mental) challenges in sports, the same drive that my brain did such a wonderful job of suppressing over the years, came back to me with overwhelming force. Although that was enough to get me hooked, CrossFit continued to awe and surprise me with all of its simple goodness. Its functionality and required toughness began to seep into every aspect of my life. I approached school, relationships, and nutrition with a much healthier perspective. CrossFit helped to replace my doubt, conquer my fears, and most importantly, restore my confidence. It has led me to an innate acceptance of who I am and who I can be. And because of that, I am eternally grateful.
Why wouldn’t I want to share this amazing and awe-inspiring program with others? Why wouldn’t I want to help guide people along this fulfilling journey? I know that what CrossFit has been for me is, in many ways, similar to what it has done for most of the outstanding people that suffer through the suck, day after day, in hopes of becoming the best person they can be. And so, I hope to facilitate that experience as best as I can.”

“I have been involved in sports ever since I could walk. During middle school, football became my primary sport and this continued into high school. I was fortunate enough to be offered scholarships from a few out of state colleges but I decided I was ready to hang up the cleats. Georgia Southern felt like a good fit for me and I began class in the Fall of 2015 to study mechanical engineering. Having no athletic focus in my life took a toll on both my health and body composition. I stopped exercising all together and gained almost thirty pounds of unhealthy weight. Finally, I was inspired to get myself back in shape. I began by doing the same old school workouts that I did when I was playing football. This was effective to lose the extra weight and my progress inspired me to change my major to Exercise Science. After a while I realized that I was not receiving the satisfaction that I thought I would from working out just to “look good.” The desire for a way to apply myself physically led me to CrossFit. I was hooked instantly and now my primary training focus is on strength and performance rather than just aesthetics. The passion that I found for CrossFit led me to become a Level 1 Coach and I hope to portray my work ethic and love for training to all the athletes that I am surrounded by and inspire those around me to work hard and never give up.”

“I played baseball in college at Georgia Tech for a year and then did a year of baseball at a junior college to continue my playing career before I had a hand injury that required a few surgeries to repair nerve damage. After I hung up the spikes I became unmotivated to continue my fitness. What was the purpose of it if I wasn’t training for something? I quickly gained weight from my lack of activity and had little discipline as far as my nutrition went. I had always been motivated to train and be in the gym because it directly impacted my performance on the field. After that I struggled to find direction in the gym by myself. This all changed the day I walked into a CrossFit Box. I was finally training FOR something again. I was training for the best life possible now.
I learned many new skills that I had never learned before, I got stronger and faster, I lost all of the weight I had gained and replaced it with muscle, and gained a new direction and mental toughness. CrossFit not only makes you a better athlete but it makes you better at life. It makes you more social, better at beating adversity, and ready for anything mentally and physically. I am forever thankful for a community and style of working out that made me accountable for my fitness, nutrition, and relationships. It has driven me to learn more about movement and the human body, building relationships, and motivating others to be the best version of themselves. I enjoy coaching because I hope to help others see and unleash the full potential inside of them that everybody has regardless of your current situation.”

“Staying active and being healthy has always been a priority of mine. Growing up, I did gymnastics, cheerleading and found myself at various gyms or doing home video workouts like Insanity, P90X or running outside. I kept hearing about CrossFit Boro at a local accounting firm I was working at and I became intrigued to try it out. On February 23, 2016, I decided to join CrossFit Boro. I had no idea, at the time, that this place would change my life in so many different ways. I have gained: a tremendous amount of knowledge, from learning proper CrossFit movements to nutrition, many strong relationships and even interest in becoming a coach myself.
In January 2019, I participated in a 28 day challenge here at CrossFit Boro and learned how small simple changes made consistently every day, along with working out, can really alter how we look and feel. After the 28-day challenge was complete, I was the winner. I lost 1.4% body fat and gained .7% in muscle mass. After seeing how much this program worked and the amazing results it provided, I pursued the Nutrition Coach Certification through Healthy Steps Nutrition so that I could help others with their journey. I recommend this to anyone! It is such a motivating way to learn about nutrition with all the accountability and support that will keep you going!”
